Jaffrey’s Park Theatre has ‘the Father of Impressionism” as their February offering of the acclaimed Exhibition on Screen Series.
The Park Theatre is proud to announce the screening of the acclaimed art documentary "Exhibition on Screen: Pissarro: Father of Impressionism" on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 1:30 PM. This event offers art enthusiasts and film lovers alike an opportunity to explore the profound influence of Camille Pissarro, widely recognized as the "Father of Impressionism."
Directed by David Bickerstaff, this documentary delves into the life and career of Pissarro, from his early days painting in Paris to his role as a mentor to many notable artists of the time. Utilizing exclusive access to the most extensive archive of any Impressionist painter, the film provides an intimate look through Pissarro's personal letters, revealing his dedication to art, his family, and his revolutionary approach to painting.
- Sydney Herald hailed the documentary as "The most extensive documentary ever made about one of the most significant artists in history."
- Mature Times praised it, stating, "This enlightening, beautifully illustrated documentary assures Pissarro his place in history."
- Acclaimed art critic Albert Wolff, while initially critical of Impressionism, was quoted saying, "Try to make Monsieur Pissarro understand that trees are not violet; that the sky is not the color of fresh butter, that in no country do we see the things he paints, and that no mind can accept such aberrations!" which in retrospect underscores the revolutionary nature of Pissarro's work.
- Paul Cézanne, a contemporary and friend, acknowledged Pissarro's influence, saying, "We learned everything we do from Pissarro. It's he who was the first Impressionist."
The film not only narrates Pissarro's journey but also celebrates his legacy through the voices of leading art historians and a stunning visual journey through his art. This event at The Park Theatre promises to be a visual treat with its state-of-the-art digital projection on its giant screen plus ULTRA surround sound in the 333-seat Eppes Auditorium.
